Belly Dancer Painting

This started out as a crayon sketch

How I Got the Idea

I have found that all of us favor certain subjects when we are drawing. Take for example two of my high school friends. She loved horses and drew horses every chance she got. He loved motorcycles and cars and made amazing drawings of them. Both of them were specialists in their interests. But if they had to draw anything else, it was another story.

I ran into this problem recently when I was facepainting. As long as the kid wanted a rabbit or a flower or a star or a mermaid, I was able to do a great job. But then a kid wanted a motorcycle. I couldn't even remember how a motorcycle differed from a bicycle. My painting was pretty lame. They were satisfied but I wasn't.

So today I was driving along thinking about it and I decided to make a list of 100 random things that I would try to doodle from memory and if memory fails, I'll have to do some research. Then I thought why stop at 100, why not make it 1000? That would be a real challenge and really hone my drawing skills. This will be useful to all you cartoonists and caricaturists out there too. Print out the list, tape it to a wall and throw a dart at it, and draw whatever it lands on. Or, cut each word out and toss them in a jar and draw one at random. Keep the jar on your drawing table and use them when you do warm up exercises. Have fun with it and share them with us if you want to.

And to make it even more interesting I'm going to add a list of 100 adjectives. So then you can not only doodle a biker, but you could doodle a silly biker, or a mean biker or a fancy biker. That opens up all new possibilities.

Also, some of the words are going to lend themselves to different interpretations. For example the word 'grill' could mean a bar-b-que grill, a car grill or the grill on a helm.

And now I have a list to make.

Seascape

A little help here

If I accidentally put the same word twice, please let me know so I can fix it. Ditto if I've missed any numbers or gotten them in the wrong order. Thanks.

My daily arts & crafts blog

  • Festival of the Rose Lyondemere. SCA

Yesterday was awesome. I got to juggle, watch belly dancers, crochet a hat, see friends, and run between the raindrops. Sometimes I love the SCA.

  • Make Lip Balm

I've wanted to make lip balm for a while. I ran across directions here: Lip Balm I don't use it every day, but I do use it a lot when I'm outdoors. It would be great if I could make my own. It looks about the same as making candles or soap (melt and pour).

  • Paper Valentines Cards

I spent today designing Valentine's Day cards for a tutorial. Hopefully I'll get it written and posted tomorrow because I'm running out of time. Some of them are simple enough to do with your children. Others are a bit more sophisticated, but surely there is something for everyone. My Grandson Puppy Love

how do you draw adjectives? Sounds a bit like a cranium challenge.

Moonmaiden profile image

Moonmaiden Hub Author 2 years ago

Maritimer, can you tell me which one you are asking about specifically?

random :) 2 years ago

I love to draw and everyone got really mad at me because I would ask "what should I draw?" so I was looking to see what to draw and this website helped me soo much!! Thank you

Chris 20 months ago

Just in reading through, blimp and jellyfish are repeated. I'll keep an eye out for more repetition.

Thanks Chris. I replaced those with new words. Glad someone is watching out for me.

Farhana 12 months ago

What an AWESOME list!! I very much share your thoughts/feelings on not being able to draw 'everything'. And I ran into the same problem when my nephew asked me to draw a dinosaur.

Thanks for sharing your list.. I think I'll join you in your quest to DRAW!

Moonmaiden profile image

Moonmaiden Hub Author 11 months ago

Thanks Farhana,

Dragons are so much fun to draw! I've never met a kid that wasn't fascinated with dinosaurs.

Caitlin  11 months ago

I want to try to do all of them but that's a lot. maybe I can do it!!

Very cool hub!

short stuff XD 10 months ago

im only fourteenm, but from what i've heard from my own town, i'm an "amazing drawer" and they want me to kind of combine most of those things on that list for a meral or somethin like that...wish me lukk!! :)

someone 9 months ago

repeats..

yo-yo mushrooms, couple... there may be others..

but i love it! you've inspired me to challenge myself :)

Moonmaiden profile image

Moonmaiden Hub Author 8 months ago

Shortstuff that's a great idea. I hope you'll share photos of it when you are done. Some people hang up rolls of butcher paper so they can just keep rolling out more paper when one section gets filled up.

@someone...thanks for catching that. I'll go fix it.

thanks!! this is awsome!

demonkitty101 7 months ago

i am 12, and i suffer artist's block a lot, and only draw in one genre, though people think i'm a great artist/writer. this list will help me with both. i'm going to print this out and use it all the time XD

Sunshine 6 months ago

This is amazing list... I would try to draw some but I'm not the best drawer.... But I'll show my best friend this!!! She's amazing at drawing!!!!! :)

Chameleon101 5 months ago

This is a great idea i love it!!! I picked two random numbers and tried to mix/cross them, I ended up drawing a globetrotter

Ronny 5 months ago

I absolutely love this! Usually, people are what I draw, and I'm glad for this long list for sketching. :D

Also, number 210 is a repeated number. (judge or mortician)

384 and 599 are both spork.

984 and 1000 are both star-crossed lovers.

210 and 414 are both judge.

I hope your day is great! And, thanks for the great list! :)

Ronny 5 months ago

Sorry! I just realized that what I wrote might've sounded... Weird? Despite the repeats, I think that the entire list is pure awesome!

So, again, thanks.

Just some help like you asked i noticed you put stra crossed lovers twice

Thanks everyone for helping me make the list better. Draw, draw, draw, it's the only way to get better.

I hope I got all the duplicates out now. I just hope the new word I used doesn't duplicate a word I already listed years ago. Thank you all for having sharper eyes than I do.

Alice 2 months ago

899 and 943 r the same!

Moonmaiden profile image

Moonmaiden Hub Author 2 months ago

Alice, thank you for catching that. Not only was it a duplicate but it was spelled wrong. Also, I'm amazed that people read the entire list.

I HAATE THIS

Minney 8 weeks ago

Thanks for this website. I was wanting to find out what fun things I could draw!

noone 8 weeks ago

I was joking about me hating this! I LOVE IT! It is the best about art I've evah seen! I am gonna have to write some of the things I want to draw in my fav journal. How long did it take you to write this? You worked real hard on it. I should start trying to draw a skydiver. Thanks!

Kingo 7 weeks ago

Great list! Super helpful for me!

And to help you ..I think 900-929 repeats again at 944-969

Moonmaiden profile image

Moonmaiden Hub Author 7 weeks ago

Kingo, after all these years I can't believe no one ever caught that. Sheesh.

Moonmaiden profile image

Moonmaiden Hub Author 7 weeks ago

Kingo, I replaced all those words. There is a chance I duplicated some previous words by doing that. So if anyone sees duplicates between 944 and 969 please let me know.

Thanks so much 7 weeks ago

This really helped me. People say I am an amazing artist, and I love making them happy when they see my art, but whenever I sit down, and get ready, I can't think of what to draw to impress them. You really have a creative mind...Thanks for the list! You really helped me a lot! :D

Hannahhoo 5 weeks ago

What a great list! I like drawing animals most and my favourite thing to draw is a dragon. I'm not very good though. =( Any way, thanks for the list and I'll go draw some of the things I skimmed over now!

Jammy 5 weeks ago

938 and 949 are both mugger. This is a great list. I'm picking 5 numbers from 1-1000 at random and drawing a combination of whatever is at those numbers.
