Bamboo For Interior Decorating

See how pliable bamboo is?

I Love Bamboo

I'm a big fan of bamboo and given the chance, I would decorate an entire house interior with it. They even make wall coverings and rugs out of bamboo. One place that is a wealth of bamboo information is the American Bamboo Society. http://www.americanbamboo.org/

We all know the Asian cultures have made extensive use of bamboo. Maybe Americans are slow to catch on, but as far as decorating goes, you can make everything from baskets to room dividers from bamboo. Bamboo can be soaked to make it pliable. You can make furniture out of it too.

I am particularly fond of Black Bamboo.

We are lucky to live close to a bamboo store called Frank's Cane and Rush. I'm telling you that guy is amazing. You can ask him about anything related to bamboo, reeds, raffia and he'll know who has it and how to get it. http://www.franksupply.com/

Some of the many things I've seen made out of bamboo include place mats, rugs, window coverings, musical instruments, chairs, tables, cookware, wall coverings, fans, umbrellas, hats, houseplants, picture frames, beaded curtains, and decorative items. And recently bamboo yarn became available. So take your bamboo knitting needles and knit up some bamboo blankets and place mats and pillows.

It's a very forgiving material. And it is also easy enough to find at swap meets and yard sales. So you can decorate on a budget. It comes in many lengths and thicknesses. And unlike mass produced goods, every piece of bamboo is original and has it's own personality.

I hope you will try some in your home decorating plans soon.

Good post. I'm a big fan of bamboo myself. You can also steam rice over a campfire with the stuff.

I too am interested in bamboo and all the things one can make out of it. I was in Japan having a dinner at a small inn and lost count of all the small bowls, cups, platters etc. that the food was presented on. It was a designer's / packager's heaven. Unfortunately, it is too stiff for the kind of basketry, I do, but I have a couple of friends who use it to create wonderful contemporary baskets.

I cut my bamboo up into 3 foot pieces, drilled holes through the tops and bottoms of each one, pushed a piece of rod through it (from home depot) and made shutters for my deck...awesome but time consuming...
