I made this chart to help me remember all the crystals I use for divination. Since I find it so useful, I thought maybe others would too. So here it is.
For more thorough definitions I recommend a book called Love is in the Earth.
Meanings of various stones
There are various methods to determine the metaphysical meaning of a stone.
I take a variety of things into account.
Hold the stone in your left hand. A few lucky people will feel a buzz or a tingle and may know intuitively what that particular stone will do. For example you are holding a piece of tiger-eye. All tiger eye may feel the same to you. Or each individual stone may speak to you differently.
Some stones increase your psychic antenna. If you are already too psychic or too empathic, you may want to avoid wearing that stone or sleeping near it. On the other hand, if you want to be more psychic, you may want to spend more time with that stone.
Say you are not one of those people that can hold a stone and get a vibe from it. Most of us aren't.
My next step would be to go by color.
I used the chakra color system.
From the base of the spine upwards those colors are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indio/Violet and White.
Red is your primal base chakra. It can be fiery passion or out of control anger. Some red stones include carnelian, red jasper, ruby, or garnet. If your sex drive has been sluggish, wear a red stone. But be cautious, because red can also be aggression.
Orange is a little gentler than red. It is confidence and business acumen. Orange stones include orange calcite, banded agates, citrine, opal, and sunstone.
Yellow is your solar plexus and your stomach area. It is also solar energy and adds confidence and vibrancy. Look for yellow jasper, topaz, gold, pyrite, tiger-eye, and amber.
Green is your heart chakra. Pink is also here. Green stones include jade, emerald, bloodstone, and malachite.
Blue is communication (throat chakra). Blue helps you with calmness, public speaking, empathy and psychic awareness. Blue stones include blue lace agate, falcon's eye, sapphire, opal, moonstone, lapis, turquoise and blue calcite. Pink stones include rose quartz, rhodocrosite, rhodonite, and some agates.
Purple is the color of psychic enlightenment. The third eye chakra is purple or indigo. Purple stones include amethyst, lepidolite, some garnets, and fluorite.
White is the color of the crown chakra and indicates clarity and purity. White is the color of choice for healing. Clear is also considered white. White stones include quartz, moonstone, calcite, talc, Herkimer diamonds, diamonds, and opals.
Black stones ground and balance and center your spirit. Some people find them too powerful. Some examples of black stones are obsidian, labrodorite, and onyx.
If black is too strong for you, choose a gray or brown stone such as smoky quartz, or zebra stone.
Remember, not all diamonds are white, not all opals are black, not all garnets are red. Every stone has it's own personality.
Mediums say that when a stone is no longer useful for you it will either fade or crack, or the chain will break or it will shatter. If you fix a necklace more than once and it keeps breaking, let that one go and find a new one.

Yes, that happens when that crystal is no longer in tune with who you are now. Time to get a new one.
I was given a beautiful, quite big piece of raw Citrine as a gift. When I opened the pouch it was in and took the piece into my hand, three little 'mouintain' pieces of it came off in my hand, all the exact same size. What does this imply?

hello, I have a curiosity about the crystal breaking thing. I have a quartz crystal, or a few rather small pocket-sized peices, and I had one long about three inches long tall one and about an inch off the top broke during some event and now its in two pieces with a tiny chip missing, (it was actually during a very powerful day, an orange moon, and many other weird things happened), and so I know you suggest to get rid of it now. BUT, what do I do with it? I can't just throw it away. I'm considering giving it back to the earth as an offering and burying it. Or would it be possible to keep the big half? Its so precious and was fairly new.
By 'get rid of it', I just meant don't wear it any more. Put it in a special place, like a shadow box, or a bottle full of special things. Maybe some day you will find a use for it again. You could even trade it to someone else.
So i was sitting out in the moonlight with my moonstone since that night my mind was jumbled with a bunch of emotions since i was upset and when i went to set it down it slipped off where i set it,it hit the ground and broke in two! When its broken like that does that mean it no longer has any attributes or is it still useful in anyway? And it was so weird when I had read what you said about it cracking when its no longer useful for you because right as I was feeling better is when it fell like it knew I no longer needed it.
I think the stones hate me as much as I hate them. I feel nothing when touching the expensive stones.
Glad i came across your site. I have a beatiful covallite pendant that was wired by the lady who sold me the piece. I stopped wearing it suddenly before i notice the crack. My reiki therapist/friend told me that i may not need it anymore or at thiz time. It has done its job. Your site just confirmed that about cystals cracking! Thanx

Consecrate it, and if it still feels good to you, tuck it somewhere like your money attraction box or a spell bottle.
If it has lost it's zing, leave it for the fairies to find.
hello i broke the tip of the crystal off of my chakra wand and i was wondering if i should repair it with a small amount of glue or leave it
bought a crystal 4 days later i forgot that I had in my pocket as I pulled my hand my crystal broke in 4 ..and i went back to tell what happen she said you need to buy a moissanite so I got it.I got home as I open the bag it fell on the ground and broke in 4 ???. at the same time i really like the gold pyrite got it ok what happen yesterday I wented to see as i pick up a piece was beside it just dis connected?? wow ?wow?and wow?
I bought a free-form smokey quartz necklace last month to help me deal with negativity. When it arrived It had a couple bubbles in it but looked very solid. I wore it about 10 days and suddenly it looks awful. It is full of cracks. I didn't drop it or anything. Why did this happen?
i had a similar experience as Barb4. I bought a citrine to help me with confidence as it works on the 3rd chakra. After wearing it for over a month..it looks so bad full of cracks and the color is fading. what does this mean? I no longer need it or there is too many negativity that it formed internal cracks.
When a crystal goes to pieces, I recommend you gather it up as best you can, wrap it in a black cloth, and bury it. It has done all it can for you and should be returned to the earth.
The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall is the only way to go :P!

I had a sphere rose quartz crystal which I placed on my table at home on a wooden stand. I took it for cleansing and put it under the sun ocassionally. I found a tiny small chip which is almost invisible 2 days ago. I am not sure if it was there when I bought it in 2010 or it chip for a reason. I never drop it before. I was told by a friend that if any crack or chip is found on a crystal, it has to be buried. However, I love the colour of this crystal and like it actually. What should I do now?
huaymei, I think it's a shame to destroy beautiful things like that. If it were mine, I'd take it off my altar and give it an honored place in a dish garden, or inside a terrarium, or a place where you can enjoy it. Rose quartz in general has tiny imperfections. The chip is just big enough for you to see now, but if you look with a magnifying glass or a microscope, you will see all kinds of things you can't see with the naked eye. If you still feel good when you hold the crystal, it's probably fine.

Thank you! I was actually holding my crystal this morning before I go to work and I still like it when I see it. The chip is really small, something like a scratch. Where will you recommend me to place it in my room? Any specific direction?
Do you know how to use a pendulum. If so, use it to find the best spot for the crystal in your room.
Dear moonmaiden, I was wandering and drawn to this healing store, this beautiful amethyst pendant stood out to me so vividly, so I thought maybe I should buy it, at this time I am going through some serious grieving right now, lost my mother and only sibling in a horrific car accident as well as I am trying to refrain from suppressing my emotions with alcohol, as I went to pass to the pendant to the lady for purchasing! It cracked in half in my hand and began to feel light headed! She wouldn't let buy the pendant and handed it to me! Now when I hold the pendant I feel funny! What does this possible mean?

I am relativity new to crystal healing/meditation. My birthday was yesterday, and my brother bought me a chunk of Celestite (paired with an Angelite sphere). The Celestite is about 3 in. long x 2 in. wide, and a stunning light blue. Last night, I was meditating with it on my chest and I fell asleep. I forgot to set an alarm for my boyfriend to wake up to, and he was about 30 mins late to work by the time he woke up, so he woke up yelling out of frustration. Needless to say, I shot straight up off the couch and the Celestite fell off my chest and landed (crystal side down)on the tile floor. The biggest point on the cluster broke and one of the tiny points broke clean off, but is still in good condition. I only just got this stone yesterday, so I don't think we had that well of a connection yet. It makes me feel sad to look at it, but when I hold it, the energies still feel the same, only a bit stressed. Is there a way to cleanse this cluster and remove the negativity? If not, I do understand what I need to do with it... :'{

I recently proposed to my partner , Leap Year 2012, and the ring is composed of a 2karat deep colored purple amethyst. My partner just told me that there is a chip on the stone now, but the diamonds on each side is still in tact. What does this all imply?

I was sharing a locker at gym with my partner and when he pulled out his shorts this gold obsidian pendant I like to wear got caught and, it shattered on the floor. Can you let me know what this means when another person breaks your stone? I haven't been drawn to wearing it recently, and I have recently working on becoming connected to my higher purpose and independence with that particular stone.
