I remember a time when belly dance videos cost at least $20. a pop and you just couldn't afford to buy all that many. We'd all congregate at the house that had the most videos and play them during M.E.C.D.A. dance parties.
Thankfully, times have changed. With sites like youtube, googlevideo and metacafe, you can get your fill of belly dancing styles from all over the globe. I made this HUB to show off some of the best ones I run across. I'll change it as I find new things, so bookmark it.
Some of the search terms you may find helpful are 'tribal fusion', "American Tribal style or ATS", 'raks sharki', 'gothic belly dance', 'triberet', 'middle eastern dance', 'oriental dance' and similar combinations.

Years ago, when I was in my mid forties and teaching belly dancing, a 22 year old dance student challenged me in class to a flexibility test she had in some college class. I lost of course. When she's 45 maybe she'll figure out that it's not so easy once your not all that flexible. But today I was thinking that while flexibility is important to a dancer there are so many other factors that are important. Most of us love to keep practicing the ones we are great at because that's our comfort zone. But if you want to grow as a dancer, it might help to pick the five you are the worst at and work on those too. Here are some I came up with off the top of my head. Thanks for sharing your story Guru. I think what many Americans don't realize is that belly dancing is for the whole family, men, women and children and that at a family celebration everyone from the youngest to the oldest get up and dance.
Great article Moonmaiden! I didn't know they were so much ways of belly dancing. I wish I could be that flexibly gracious. It looks like it really requires a lot of practice. And I like the second video. The dance is so beautiful. Enticing, gracious even if the beat was quite rapid. I got goosebumps watching it. So amazing! (^^,)

Hi, Moonmaiden: My grandparents were from Turkey, and when we had family gatherings in Brooklyn, my dad would put on a Turkish album, my little sister and i (we were about 5 and 7 at the time) would run and throw one of my mom's scarves on our head and bellydance together with our Aunt Fanny. Our uncles would stick quarters on our foreheads. This was something our classmates could not relate to at all, but is one of my fondest childhood memories, which this page brought back to me. Time for lessons! Thanks!!
