Using a Knifty Knitter Loom

Stocking Cap Made on the Knifty Knitter Green Ring

Knifty Knitter knitting loom

Many people are perplexed with knitting. They find it too frustrating what with dropping the needles or dropping the stitches.

But recently I purchased a knitting loom called the Knifty Knitter. It is not only a perfect gift to give to your mother, it's a great thing to buy for yourself so you can knit hats for your mother. You can also make baby blankets and newborn hats for shower gifts for the mother to be. It's made by Provo crafts and their website has free patterns.

I figured out how to use it in five minutes with the enclosed directions. And I showed it to a neighbor who is 11 years old. The girl picked it up right away and said she was going to get one to make a hat for her grandmother. Her Mom liked it so much she's going to go buy one for both of them to use.

I finished my hat in about six hours. The kit comes with 4 rings of different sizes, a hook, a yarn needle and directions. You either use bulky yarn with it or 2 strands of worsted weight yarn.

So if you are one of those moms or mothers-to-be that are too impatient and frustrated to knit the conventional way, try the Knifty Knitter.

Update: Yesterday I ran across another knitting loom by Lion Brand.

Starting the hat

Red Hat

Update: Long Loom Series

I just got the new loom series of long knitting looms for things like shawls and bedspreads at a sale. I got the whole set of 4 for $12.00. And I got some more Lion Brand Homespun like in the two hats above. The texture goes so well with the Knifty Knitter.

I finished the red hat and gave it to my daughter for Christmas. She loves it.

Long series

Update

I was afraid I might get bored with the loom knitting quickly. But that hasn't been the case. I've now made about 9 hats. I'm almost done with a tube scarf made on the smallest ring. I find 1 bulky weight yarn, 2 worsted weight yarns or 3 very thin yarns held together work the best for me.

  • Funny Pompom Envelope Hats

Today I delivered these two hats I custom made. I'm open to taking more custom orders in any color combination and in any size. These are great for photo sessions for professional photographers. Order a selection of sizes and colors. I'm going to make a bunch for my daughter's photo studio as well. They are also very comfortable for every day wear. I love wearing mine!

I bought some charms from a lady out there including kokopelli, a coyote, a roadrunner, a saguaro, and some more conventional charms. The weather was perfect out there and we camped 2 nights by Quartzsite where I took many photos.

There is no street parking at El Dorado. But most of the people who said they might come live closer to Long Beach, so I may get outvoted. If Sig comes we can work on gourd art and spoon carving too. But he works in the medical field so his schedule is all over the place. He gave me a spoon carving tool and I can't wait to get some green wood to try it out on. Also I hope David will come. He lives in Laguna Beach, so either location is closer for him that Pasadena. Of couse if you are reading this and live near Anaheim and think you want to learn these skills, leave me a comment so I can make sure you know when the meetings are.

Moonmaiden Hub Author 5 years ago

Hi Lisa,

My long cap does not get thinner as it gets to the end. To make it thinner, you would need to make decreases. Maybe there is a way to do that on a knitting loom, but I don't know how to do it myself. Generally when I make a cap like you are asking about I do it on double pointed needles with regular knitting methods and decrease it bit by bit until there is a tiny point at the end. If you figure out how to do it please share with the rest of us.

Mrsolduff@aol.com 4 years ago

Hello to all the KK loomers. I have found the way to decrease by sliding the stitch over to the next peg and lifting over two instead of one with the bulky yarn or 4 over 2 with using 2 strands of ww yarn. Then move the yarn on the peg next to the empty over to the one that you just slipped off. Just decrease the number of stitches till you get the legnth.. I would like do it on the 2 to 3erd peg. Then when you come back around you will wrap as you always did.. it is realy easy.. when you get to like say 6 stitches gather up with the tie yarn with the needle and pull together and attach a pom pom or leave as normal hat.. questions E me..

Just got the long loom set for my grandaughter. In about 30 min she had it all figured out and is making a blanket for her little brother. GREAT investment. I had tried to teach her to knit before but too frustrating for her. any free patterns for her would be greatly appreciated.

I recently found some long loom knifty knitter instructions on youtube, and surely more will be posted all the time. The long loom can be used for circular knitting (just imagine a circular loom flattened into an oval), or they can be used for double knitting or single knitting. The book that came with the long loom series sure doesn't cover much. I hope provo steps up to the plate and publishes a tutorial for all the sizes of looms and ways they can be used. I understand your frustration. I'll post some photos in another hub on using the long looms soon.

i have the knitter but i lost the instructions can you post them

The directions are copyrighted but they have them on the provo website.http://www.provocraft.com/products/index.products. They have a .pdf file of the directions. This must be a new page because it wasn't there a week ago when I looked for long loom directions.

Hi I jsut got a knifty knittter circular loom I cant get it going! it gets about 2 rows then gets so tight and I can read directions and you are right some of the videos on youtube arent that hot. but what am I doing wrong? I must be doing something wrong? it tightens up and I cant lift it over and im trying to get it loose when I wrap it help!

thanks!

Moonmaiden profile image

Moonmaiden Hub Author 3 years ago

Let's see if I can help. Are you using two strands of yarn? Are you wrapping each peg all the way around once, completing the whole circle and they again twice? Make the loops as loose as you can without them coming off by themselves. Then starting at the side peg, lift the next bottom loop on the right over it's top loop and off the peg. Do one loop at a time in order until you get all the way around. The first row is the tightest. Things go a lot easier once you get past that part. So don't give up.

Gary, I made a video for you and for others that needed a little more help.

Robin 3 years ago

Hi Moonmaiden, Luv your site. My questions concerns using a long loom like a circular loom. The distance between the "end" pegs and last pegs on the long rows is slightly larger than the distance between the pegs on the long rows. Is that a problem in the look of the "circular" knitting produced on the long loom?

Moonmaiden profile image

Moonmaiden Hub Author 3 years ago

I personally have never noticed a difference, but then again I tend to used 2 or 3 strands of yarn with texture so it might be fluffing up to fill the gaps. Has anyone else experienced noticable gapping?

roset40 3 years ago

I recently purchased the knifty knitter (both strait and circular) so my wrists would not go through the carpal tunnel pain in my wrists. I would like to get step by step instructions I'm having difficulties using the inst that come along with the sets.

jess 3 years ago

to decrease, you slip a stitch on to the peg next to it.

Kansas 3 years ago

I would like to try using the kk looms. Which ones do you suggest getting first? I found the set of 4 rounds, the long purple loom and the rectangle set of looms at a local store. Thanks!

Moonmaiden profile image

Moonmaiden Hub Author 3 years ago

Hi Kansas. That all depends on what you want to make. If you are making hats for adults, the green loom is a good choice. If you want to make blankets, one of the long rectangular looms might be easier.

Juliana 3 years ago

Thank you for posting this, it's been 10 years since i've knitted lol. I have one question, How do you "close" the end up? do you runn a thread through it and gather it up? or is there a way to tighten it without any extra stiches? thank you!

ProvoCraft did not invent loom knitting. They just did a better job of marketing it. Wooden looms have been around for a long time, and the ones you saw were most likely *not* based on ProvoCraft's design for the Knifty Knitter.

I feel weird posting as I swear im the only male that does this. I just purchased the peach (I think thats the color) loom. Now I remember doing this as a teenager, my mom showed me how to use a styraphome spool and four stick pins as a loom. Now I drive a truck and was looking for a way to kill time. Lo and behold they have come up with actual looms. Im a serious beginner. I want to start right in and make something but I dont have the foggiest idea what you are talking about by looming different patterns. Is there a place where I can learn exactly, step by step how to loop the yarn on the loom. I have tried to do it the way I remembered before but there is way too much gapping between strands. If someone can help me out please email me.

Hi Alex,

I think I have an answer for you. The Knifty Knitter looms have the pegs pretty far apart, which leaves gaps. Most knitters are using 2 or 3 strands of yarn all held in the hand as one. Usually one of the yarns is furry or fluffy and that fills the gaps.

Or you can look for finer looms by other companies. On those the pegs are smaller and closer together forming a tighter weave.

Check your bookstore. More books come out every day on things to make on a knitting loom. Also check youtube.

I have the set of long looms. I have made like three scarves but i want to make a hat. I only have the long looms and i've been told there was a way to make hats with the long looms. I bought a little pamphlet to help me and it is very vague. It told me to use the yellow long loom to make a hat but it doesn't tell how to make it. I need help A.S.A.P.!! Please be VERY descruptive. also if i want to make a childrens hat which loom of this perticular series do i use. its for an average 11 year old girl.

Moonmaiden profile image

Moonmaiden Hub Author 19 months ago

Hi Ivy,

If I were going to make a hat on a long loom, I'd make an envelope hat. This photo shows what me wearing one. http://www.flickr.com/photos/almostfamous/14921529 This one wasn't made on a knitting loom though. Sometimes people hang a tassel on each corner. They look really cute on little girls.

To make the rectangle you would only use some of the pegs. There is no way I can tell you exactly how many without making a hat.

I hope this helps point you in the right direction at least.

You might find my new flat panel tutorial helpful as well.

Hello! my name is Lena and i want to make an afghan with 1 color. I dont understand all those crazy directions the book gives me and they only give you directions to make a 2 colored afghan. and i knit on cirle looms because my hands are small and fat.

Hi Lena,

To make it just one color, get two balls of the same color yarn, and use them both at the same time (double strands of blue for example).

Well that was completely useless.. how to make a sock with the loom... but yet NEVER tells you how... only goes, go see the tutorial for the heel... wth? there's not tutorial for the heel!!

Marce 18 months ago

Hello, I have never knitted before and a friend recommended me to get the Knifty Knitter. Well, I just got a package of round looms and thought it might work for scarfs and hats but it seems to be only for cylindrical items. If I want to make mostly scarfs should i get the long looms? and if i change it can i make hats w/ the long also? Sorry this is confusing to me ...I would appreciate any comments.

Moonmaiden profile image

Moonmaiden Hub Author 17 months ago

Hi Marce,

You can make scarves on the round looms as well. When you wrap the loom, you only go partway around and then turn back. You work back and forth until it's the width and length you want. This recent tutorial I made shows the basics of making a flat panel on a round loom. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPpewf8zgoQ

You can also make a scarf on the small circular loom. You go round and round and make a long tube. Then you flatten the tube, put fringe on the ends and you have a scarf. They are nice and warm.

Hi Cnith,

I am planning to get a sock loom real soon. Then when I know how to make socks, I'll make a new hub on it. In the meantime, youtube has various sock making tutorials.

I am trying to find a Serenity loom. I was wondering if you knew where I could buy an inexpensive one?

jerricamorgantini 4 months ago

First off, im so very thankful i found your tutorials. They are so much more helpful then the instruction books that come with the looms. So thank you very much. I have both the circle looms and the long scarf looms. I have tried for many days now to make a blanket for my new baby however i can't figure out how to make it wide enough on the longest blue loom. So i tried to make panels on the circle loom. Did i miss video two that shows you had to fish it? And after make multiple panels do you mind making a video showing how to connect them?

Moonmaiden profile image

Moonmaiden Hub Author 4 months ago

Hi Jerri,

I thought people would easily grasp the concept of sewing the panels together until the piece was as wide as they wanted, but I think I overestimated. I do need to make a video on putting the whole piece together. It's on my stack of to-do's.

I think many people must have gotten a loom for Christmas because I'm suddenly getting tons of traffic on this topic.

Today at Michael's I saw Martha Stewart has a new loom kit out with interchangeable parts. I'm so curious about it. I'm tempted to buy it so I can write a review.

@Carrie55, I don't know what a Serenity loom is. Sorry I can't help you there.

I have the circle looms but the yarn I have now is thin and I'm not sure how to use 2 or 3 strands? I only have one roll of this yarn so what do I do?

Moonmaiden profile image

Wow Maureen, that is wonderful.

Sunny, one roll may not be enough to complete your project. If you have a scale you can weigh the yarn and figure out how much 1/3 of it would be, and roll it into 3 separate balls.
