Knifty Knitter Long Loom Series
75Double Knitted Scarf
Long loom frustrations
Ever since I posted a Hub on how to use the circular knitting loom, I've been getting questions from people wanting to know how to make things on the long looms. So yesterday I decided I better teach myself how to use one. And I found the directions that come with the kit were not all that helpful. For one thing, the booklet looks like it would be big enough, but it actually contains instructions in 4 languages, so only about 1/4 of it is instructions on how to use the loom.
So I went to the Provo website recommended by the brochure, and they have virtually nothing on using the long looms.
So I went to http://www.youtube.com/ and found some, but alas, some of them use a technique entirely different from the one in the booklet, using more of a double lacing pattern.
The long looms can be used for circular knitting (just like the round loom only squished into an oval), or, you can do double knitting with it, or single knitting (by only using some of the pegs).
I will post photos of my project so far. Remember, I'm just like you, learning as I go. If we put our heads together we can figure this thing out.
One woman on youtube even displays a circular baby blanket made on the knitting loom and says anything is possible. Unfortunately she doesn't explain how she did it. So we are off like a herd of turtles.
Update: The Provo site just added instructions. About time I say! http://www.provocraft.com/products/index.products.php?cl=knifty%20knitter

- New Hat and Two New Tutorials on Using the Knifty Knitter Looms
Last night I designed a new hat on my Knifty Knitter so that will be the two tutorials for this week. I'm getting a lot of hits on my other new KK tutorials. Part One Part 2
- A New Tutorial
Loom knitting tutorial. How to make a flat panel on a circular loom. You can use one panel to make a scarf or sew them side by side to make blankets, lap covers, purses, pillows and other rectangular items. I just finished this one a few minutes ago so I know you haven't seen it yet.

- Make Lip Balm
I've wanted to make lip balm for a while. I ran across directions here: Lip Balm I don't use it every day, but I do use it a lot when I'm outdoors. It would be great if I could make my own. It looks about the same as making candles or soap (melt and pour).
- Paper Valentines Cards
I spent today designing Valentine's Day cards for a tutorial. Hopefully I'll get it written and posted tomorrow because I'm running out of time. Some of them are simple enough to do with your children. Others are a bit more sophisticated, but surely there is something for everyone. My Grandson Puppy Love
- Crochet Some Hearts
I couldn't resist trying this. I just grabbed some acrylic yarn that was laying on my desk, but I thought it came out pretty cool anyway. This is all one strand of yarn.

Nice clear instructions - thank you!
Thank you thank you thank you!!!! The instructions that came with my loom are horrible. I really appreciate this, now I can figure this thing out.
Just received a long loom and can't understand the booklet that came with it. What great instructions you have put together. Thank you.
I know how to do the double knit on the long loom, but I would like to know how to do the single stitch on the long pink loom.... do you know how to do that?? I've made several scarves using the double stitch, but I'm wanting to try the single knit... thanks!
Thanks for your visual. Very helpful. I tried it with only one strand of yarn, came out too loose. Stitches looked very messy. I guess two strands work better and give a tighter and better looking stitch. Will try it again.
Very helpful photos, thank you
I started the loom knitting with the purple long loom..I am addicted and recently bought the round loom set. My question is where can I find the other long looms?
I presume this is what the wooden cotton reel with 4 nails in the top developed into -its rather cool -Im wondering if I can buy one in Australia - do they come up in EBay and Amazon - because I would be happy to buy mail order hint hint!
I've seen them on ebay. I also know that I bought the long loom set for my granddaughter at Michaels (and if you wait for the 50% off coupon it only costs $10! - what a deal!). I appreciate the wonderful step by step pics you did I too was frustrated with the directions.
I have a question about the ribbed knit stitch on the long loom. It's shown in the Kinfty Knitter III booklet that I bought at Wal-Mart, but I can't figure out how to turn around and go the back the other direction when I get to the other end. Do you have any advice?
Thank you very much for your posting on the project!!!!!! It's helped me alot. You were so right about the web site, it showed nothing about "How To" on it. So thanks to you I can now get started on my daughters and sons blankets.
Thank you, thank you. I bought the long looms and was so frustrated trying to follow the instructions. Your pictures and explanation were wonderful. It must have been a lot of work and I want you to know that it is really appreciated. Thanks.
Thank you so much! I bought the looms today because I just couldn't crochet correctly, let alone knitting. The kit seemed easy yet I almost laughed at the instructions. I couldn't figure them out for the world. You've helped me tremendously! Thank you again =)
Hi! My daughters and I worked on the round looms for awhile and became addicted...I bought the long looms last week and, you're right. The instructions are a JOKE. I followed them very closely but my stitches came out too loose, even when I tried with 2 strands! Any ideas?
Thank you so much for this. I have just got my loom and this helped ALOT. But I dont know how to finish it. How the heck do you remove the knitting. Thanks for the help.
Hi, Thanks for the very organize project. I try using the instructions in the package. After 3 hours and nothing done, I decided to go to my computer. Now I will try again using your instructions and pictures, and will make a scraft.
thank you so much that helps more than you know i really appreciate the help
thank you for the instruction it was much easier just watching of youtube.com
great info thank you
Wow you are a god send, I bought the same loom you did and the instructions were terrible, but your pictures really helped alot... I'm not sure if I did it right but it looks nice, I just need to know how to finish it so i can get the yarn off the loom.... thanks again!
The only thing i thought wasn't explained was the second set of wraps. one you pull it and 'hold for a moment'...then what? 'adding next set of wraps' didn't help much...wouldn't that leave the last peg without a top wrap? (that keeps happening when i try)
Hi and thanks for the info it is very helpful. I still am having a problem understanding how to make a flat panel on the long looms. Every time I try the yarn is to tight and it won't work. I tried looking for the directions on the provocraft web page but could not find it. I can use the round looms but I can't seem to get the long looms. I'am really anxious to try them. Can you help?
Thanks ,
April Kegley
Good news! I figured it out...the answer is yes, you do leave a corner peg without a top wrap in that step...and I finished my scarf!! the ending isn't that hard...if you do it right, it makes little loops that you can pull the last strand through, then tie in a knot and done!
I couldn't have done it without your tutorial, though...thanks! =D
I appreciate your clear instructions, the company should hire you to do the booklet! I was wondering if you have any instructions on the other stitches the company mentioned on the back of their booklet.
I, too, wanted to thank you. I am just hopeless when crafting... though I love it very much. I am making something now with the e wrap on pink oval loom.... my husband asked me what it was..... I was then stumped! I have no clue. I don't even know how to finish it off. and what exactly is knit one pearl two? HELP!!! lol Thank you!!
Its great instructions, but i just need to know how to finish, like u said u would be doing. but im sure ur a busy woman lol. get back to me soon. thanks again
THANKS SO MUCH IT WAS MUCH CLEARER TO SEE IT DONE, COULDN'T FIGURE OUT THE INSTRUCTION THAT CAME WITH THE LOOMS. HOWEVER I NEED HELP HOW DO YOU FINISH THE PRODUCT. IM DOING A SCARF BUT DON'T KNOW HOW TO STOP AND TAKE IT OFF.
how to you bind off using the kniffty loom
You are just wonderful for helping. Can't thank you enough!! I am sure I will have lots of questions.
i'm trying to make a scarf. i only bought one skein of yarn and now realize i need more yarn. how do i attach the second skein to the loom to make the scarf longer?
Could you help with turning when working with the ribbed stitching?
Thank you. now I am going to tackle a shawl.
Thank you so much for your pictures! They were a lot more helpful than some of the videos I saw on Youtube. The pictures were nice and clear! This is my first time knitting and I was having a hard time getting started. Thanks again!
how do I know which looms makes what?
There is a series of booklets published called knitting with the knitfy knitter by provocraft that I found in my local wal mart for 50 cents each. They look like pamphlets with about 8 or 9 projects each in them. Very helpful, and there is alot of info on the long looms, plus a section in the front for different stitches. I just finished a basic toboggan from this book on my long looms, used as if it were a round loom as discussed above. Ilove these things!
MoonMaiden~
Please help. I have three projects going on three different looms.. because I can't figure out how to take the scarves off the darned looms! I don't crochet, so I can't figure out the instructions with the crochet hook. Please.. if you can.. can you explain this to me? Incidentally, your tutorials are phenominal! You should work for ProvoCraft!
I was going to try the mittens but the directions are confusing. They mention the e wrap so that from above it looks like series of lowercase eaCtms. This is the provo craft mitten pattern I got off the Provo Craft site. Thanks, Toni toniandlou@live.com
oh THANK you!!! My dear lady, you are a GODsend! I was SO confused by the silly pamphlet included with the knift knitter, as well as the instructions they provided on the website. And I understand crocheting, too! I just never got the hang of knitting ~ so I thought, you know, those knitter doo-hickey's might just be the answer... but HAH ~ up till now I was STILL stumped! Dumb thing is, I even know how to weave... but the little booklet they included with the knitter was SO ... annoying! Your pictures made it perfectly clear, however! Again, THANK YOU!!!

I am trying to make some scarves but find that one skein of yarn is far too short how can you add a skein to make a longer one?
Justasoftbreeze@yahoo.com
WEll finally . complete understandable instructions. Thank you so much.
i still dont understand how to do the e wrap. No matter what I try, I'm still not sure what it is or that it's right. I really want to get this done and am feeling very frustrated. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks!
Thank you Thankyou Thank you
Hi, I was making a baby blanket with 4 medium size squares with the letters Individual letters in each square to spell out baby. Well, when I started my 1st square, it just narrowed into the center making it smaller with the shape of a 'backwards C' on each side and wasn't looking good. So, I gave up. How do you keep it from going inward using the blue long loom, when you want a straight edge and the same width on both sides? Any help on this? Thanks!
I was wondering if it is possible to convert standard knitting patterns to the looms. I have a Christmas Afghan pattern that is knitted in squares and then sewn together. Each block consists of a picture so there is a lot of color changes and I've never been able to master it. What do you think?
As an FYI...there is a small woman-owned business that claims to have created the "long loom" design (in wood) only to be copied by "a...well-known craft company"...I'm not connected with them, but I came across their website as I was searching for information on knitting boards (and came across yours as well, and your instructions and photos are excellent!) Check out http://www.oldfashionedknittingboard.com and needless to say...you might want to re-reconsider who you buy from ;)
Thank you so much for this blog. Your directions are so clear and consise. I just purchased a purple long loom from Provocraft and was getting discouraged because the directions are so confusing.
How do you get tit of the loop. Please tell me ho to do it. Thant you , I' just learning ho to doing it
Hi, can you tell me where you got that grey and pink yarn and what Brand it is
Hi, Moonmaiden: Thank you for taking the time to document this perplexing little pastime. The instructions that came with my long loom set are not good. It might be that the different languages get in the way. It's enough to have to read my language, figure out what the loom wants from me. The burden falls on the reader to sort out the languages, which gets in the way of learning. As you mention, taking the knot off of the anchor peg is important. Thank you for working this out for me. Best wishes, Knottsdale.
THANK YOU!! I have been looking all over for this yarn. I was thinking it might be red heart, but couldn't find anything. You've given me one more clue to search. BTW, you're instructions were SOOO helpful. I did my first scarf totally wrong, and after looking at your instructions scarf #2 is going MUCH better. I'm using black and white yarn.
I'd love to make a baby blanket for my daughter. Any idea on an easy pattern with no crochet? TIA!
I cannot figure out how to decrease on my round looms. I am trying to make a hat and without decreasing, it's too bulky on top. Somebody please HELP!
I just started using the long loom to make a scarf. Your instructions are phenomenal! I am chomping at the bit to see the pictures of how to close the scarf. Although, I have read the instructions over and over they do not make any sense to me. In the meantime I'm starting another scarf. I'm trying to make Christmas presents. Thanks for your help.
Can you upload how to do single knitting in long looms?
Thanks for your help. Has anyone figured out how to make the mittens shown on the P. Craft site? I don't get the e-loop thing.
my sister does the loom, but she having trouble on figure how to take them off of the looms
thank you girls have just too knitters loom patterns
can you show us how to do a single knit instead of a double because on the instructions for the knifty knitter it said that you'd find it at www.provocraft.com but i didn't PLEASE HELP
Thank you! Daughter got a loom kit from Grandma. Grandma helped her make a hat on the round loom, but couldn't figure out the long loom (horrible directions). Then Gma went home & it was up to mom to figure it out. YEAH. now, i can. THank you.
I'm looking for flat panel single knitting instructions start to finish, from casting to knitting the single panel to casting off. Also, any patterns for scarves, hats, and any additional "stitches" would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
This page and this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgLYwCgF63E I found extremely helpful!
I want to make a hat with cute ear flaps.... can you tell me how?? or direct me to page?
I don't know how to finish the top of the hat.I am also using the knifty knitters one. From the instructions I can't understand it.
I made my first scarf. Came out nice but can't figure out how to take it off the loom. Help. Thanks
It's great to see so many people using the Knifty Knitter. Is it as easy to use as they say? Leave a review at http://www.seenontvreviews.com/2010/02/04/knifty-k
If anyone claims to have "invented" this knifty knitter loom they need to know that it has just been reinvented in modern material. I have a very, very old one that consists of two long hoops of wood with different size wooden pegs and have sketches of something called a "knitting rail" that is two 2by4's fastened together at the ends with rows of nails about l/4 inch apart on each 2by4. It was used to knit wool blankets. I remember my grandmother making knitting spools out of four small nails and a wooden spool. She used it to make pull string closures for draw string bags. Oh, yes love your photos!I am currently trying to cope with More Knitting Wheel Fashions by Kathy Norris. I am a bit confused...How do you knit and purl on this hoop? I never knitted with needles so that may be my problem.
this visual really helped me out because I was having so much trouble understanding the book! THANKS! I hope to make lots more projects now!
To decrease on both sides in double knit on the kk long loom:with one loop only on each peg, before you wind yarn over the pegs, pick up the first loop on the first peg and move it to the second peg, also move the last loop to the next to last peg.then work as usual picking up thetwo loops as one .this will form a triangle, 6 or 8 triangles sewn together will form a circle of sorts.
a little correction on what I wrote yesterday. I meant the loops on the first pegs both top and bottom (or front and back),and the last top and bottom pegs. Four pegs in all. Also that to continue to decrease would make a triangle if you decrease to one loop.
When using the long looms, if you wrap skipping every other peg then turn and wrap the pegs you skipped you will find that your knitting will be two sided (not a front and a back). Blankets look far better with two front sides!!!!
KNIT STITCH
There are two ways the "e-wrap stitch" and the "true knit stitch"
(1) The "e-wrap stitch" is done by wraping yarn around the number of pegs you are going to use then wrap them again in reverse and lift the bottom yarn you wrapped first over top of the backward wrapping then wrap again.
(2) The "true knit stitch" is done by wraping all the pegs you are going to use either on a peg wheel (round loom) or just one row of pegs on the straight peg Loom (straight wheel) then loosely lay the yarn over top og the out side of the pegs and lift the wrapped yarn over top of the one layed on top of pegs. Ten repeat by laying yarn on top of the pegs etc....
PURL STITCH
Personally I have only tried the purl stitch once, maybe I'll try it again sometime????
Step 1- Wrap the number of pegs you need on the circle loom of long loom (I have tried only one row of pegs).
Step 2- Lay the yarn on the outside of the wheel, under the yarn you just wrapped on in step one.
Step 3- Insert the knitting tool down between the loop, the yarn you lain over the pegs, and the wheel, Now turn the knitting tool anp pull the yarn that you laid over the pegs up through the loops forming new loop.
Step 4- lift the origional loop off the peg and put the new loop you formed in it's place on the peg.
Taking finished knitting off your loom
Round Looms and Long Looms if you are using only one row of pegs.
I take yarn of a different color and using large yarn needle.
Step 1- Go through each and every loop that is on the loom and very loosely and tie each end of the yarn so that the loops can not fall off.
Step 2- Now using the loom tool take each and every loop off the loom.
Step 3- Now you need,a crochet needle and a long piece of yarn the same color as the yarn you as the piece you took off the loom.
Starting at one end putting the crochet needle in the loop and wrap one end of the long piece of yarn (leaving a tail) over the chrochet needle and pull it through the Loop and Chain one.
Step 4- REPEAT STEP 3- Untill you have crocheted through all the loops you removed from the loom.
Step 5- cut the yarn you are working with and pull it through the last loop that is on your crochet hook Now pull out the yarn that is not the correct color.
Removal of your piece from a Long Loom when using both rows of pegs.
BINDING OFF
Step1- the loops off the front row and place them on the back row one-by-one and using the knitting tool take the bottom loops up over the top loops.
Now look at my comment above follow all of the five steps.
Removing your work from a loom
GATHERED METHOD OF REMOVING WORK
(SUCH AS HATS ETC....)
Take a yarn needle and yarn the same as your knitted piece and thread the needle.
Step one- Go through every loop on the loom.
Step2- Take the loops off the loom using the knitting tool.
Step 3- Pull the Yarn to gather the knitted piece.
Step 4- turn the knitted piece wrong side our and tie a knot in the yarn with the knitted piece as tight as you need it. (I personally recomenc tying the yarn three times so that in will not come out), now cut the yarn and turn your project right side out.
Thanks so much for the detailed instructions and pictures. I was so confused after reading the instrustions that came with the set. You really helped out!
Hi, I live in Western Australia, and started loom knitting about 2 and half years ago, after buying a round loom set at a big craft store. At first, i had no idea what to do, so I Googled it, and came up with some wonderful sites, including this one, that taught me. Books are hard to find here, but, I have made my own books of patterns and instructions for personal use, by downloading from the internet sites and putting them in files. I had no idea such a simple item can create so much - i am an addict!
how do u finsh it
Just wanted to add another thanks! I thought I'd try the loom after carpal tunnel made holding needles too difficult, but was so confused by the booklet. Your tutorial is great. Thank you!
Hi, im 14 and i discovered this about 2 yrs ago. i love it but can never find any other patterns other than the snood (a ring round the neck) and the plain scarf for the rectangular loom. if anyone knows any sites it would be helpful!
thanks
i got the long loom a couple of years ago for christmas and even though the diresctions were a little hard to understand i figured it out fairly quickly after a couple of experimental tries its the remembering how to do it thats hard it took me a couple of tries to correctly remember and and im hoping to get all of the looms the long and short and the circular i wasnt sure i would know how to use them the circular i mean but the video posted on this site was a big help for if i ever gets my hands on the circular looms
Thank you for taking the time to post photos and clearly stating the directions. This is a wonderful tutorial. Looking forward to more, if you are still loom knitting!
i wanted to know if you know how to make a baby hat out of the long loom not the round. i cannot find any instructions on how to make it while using the long loom only the round and it takes me an hour to do things with the long loom but weeks with the round, can you help me?
Thanks for this :)
Is it just me or do the stitches seem really loose on the knifty knitters? I have tried all shapes and sizes of looms and to no avail the stitches look incredibly loose and sloppy. Am I doing something wrong?
Thank you that was very helpful! i cant wait to go try it! and dont forget JUSTIN BIEBER ROCKS THE WORLD!! :D
How do you count the rows on a long loom? I started making a scarf and I got so excited I figured out how to do it, I forgot to count the rows! oops....any help?
These are the most detailed and thorough instictions I've seen so far on using the looms. I'm just starting to use the round loom and my boyfriend got me some long looms which I can't use until Christmas ;) I will definitely bookmark this page and use it often. Thank you
I love this but could you give instructions on how to make other things?
Any pictures on the single row of knitting on the long loom instead of the double where you cross cross? Also pictures of finishing off a scarf...hats are easy. Thanks!
Any pictures on the single row of knitting on the long loom instead of the double where you cross cross? Also pictures of finishing off a scarf...hats are easy. Thanks!
Does anyone have a suggestion for numbering your pegs with something other than a Sharpie marker? The Sharpie rubs off too quickly. Thanks!
How do you knit off double knitting on the long loom?
Problem is wrapping the second row of yarn in the same pattern as first...One end peg will only have one wrap if I go back with yarn in same direction. I've made lots of scarves, but cross the first wrap of yarn. What do I do at the ends...can't see this on your video. It is very good, but this point questionable.
How do you knit a a single flat panel for a blanket? I am new to this...
Thank you so much for the many pictures, it sure help me get started. Can't wait to try my looms.
wounder if u can help with a strange few questions.
i was wondering in on the long loom when it says 27 peg does it mean on row a and b or just a. i cant decide if i have a 27 peg board or not. hope i dont sound silly but i cant find the answer.

there are lots of knitting and crochet mags like the art of knitting and the art of crochet. but i cant find a magazine or book with clear enough pictures and instructions the internet has so many i dont no where to begin. hobbie craft
dont sale knitting looms anymore.. so were stuck please help
can you please explain to me what a purl stich is and how you increase and decrease......someone HELP!
Thank you so much for sharing these directions. Like you, I had trouble with the instructions in the booklet that came with my long loom set, and I can't find anything really helpful on Youtube, either.
What type of know do you use to add additional yarn for a longer project? Also if you want a wider piece how do you link two panels?
can you make socks actual socks not slipper socks with the long loom
What all can you create with long looms? I recently just bought mine and have made tons and tons of scarfs, can you make blankets, socks, slippers, and gloves on a long knitting loom?
Thank you!
How do you finish it?
The gauge on the knifty knitters is too large for regular socks. You can knit thick socks with an actual heel and toe on the blue circle or on the long loom with the adjustable pegs(there are videos on youtube).
Other loom makers sell finer guage looms, with pegs set closer together for sock knitting.
There are great videos on youtube for both purl stitching and sewing panels together to create a larger project.
The purl stitch: lay your yarn n across the front of the peg below the stitch already on the peg. Take hook behind the stitch and grab the yarn pulling it up through the stitch and easing the stitch off the peg, replacing it with the loop you just formed by grabbing the yarn with your hook. This is much easier to understand in a video and there is a great one on you tube.
Sewing panels together is done with the plastic needle that came with your knitter, when searching the net for instructions, it is done the same way as sewing pieces made with needle knitting. you can simply whip stitch them together (stitching through the stitches) or try one of the fancier techniques on you tube that can make your seams invisible (blend in).
I just got a long loom and am trying to make a scarf. These instructions are great but my stitches seem way too loose. Am I doing something wrong? I made one scarf with a thicker yarn and its pretty but very loose. I am starting one with a different type of yarn using two strands. Any input is appreciated.
yay! finally i figured out how to do this. the instructions in the box were terrible
Just picked up a set of long looms today, and can't wait to get started -- even more so now, thanks to your clear instructions! I bought my first set of only a couple of days ago (the circular kind) and have already made three hats. Now, of course, I want matching scarves...and eventually will move on to shawls and throws.
I am hyperventalating & I have COPD. The instructions in the "Provo Craft" are useless. Help me rightnow. Please. I want to make an accessory scarf for my 12 year old grandaughter's birthday, Jan. 20. I only know how to make dish cloths. K & P & I don't have much time or breath left to waste.
does anyone know how to add a new ball of yarn to the long loom? I'm knitting a scarf and the wool's about to run out before I can get to the length I want.
Thankyou so much I love looming I am from Australia and found the round loom set of 4 from spotlight for $14.95 after looking at your you tube videos you are a great teacher. Now with my looms I will be looming for charities in Australia
i love making hats, scarfs, and blinkets, i make them for kiids and they LOVE them!and my grandma loves them to! im only 11
I have almost given up on the round and long looms. In fact I took my long looms back. Horrible instruction book.
I have tried making hats for kids and when I use 2 strands of yarn, it is too bulky, when I use one strand of a soft yarn, it has no stretch. I live in a small town so my choices are limited and buying online is hard as I can't visualize what the yarn feels like or how it will finish. I am trying to make hats that you make about 24 inches long, but the yarn has stretch to it, and when you are done, you take your first round and put the stiches on the last row, work one strand over the other, cut off a long strand, weave thru and take stitches off the loom. Wow, this has turned out to be pretty windy! lol Anyway, can you recommend a yarn that has "stretch" to it, that can be used? So when I take the hat off the loom, it will stretch to fit the head?
thanks

Need your help. I am a beginner at loom knitting and have just started a flat scarf. I have been working on it off and on this week and I noticed yesterday that my stitch has "flipped". Like I said beginner, so I am not sure if that makes sense. I thought that I would just keep going and when I got to the end I would just figure out how I flipped it and flip it back, but somehow I did it again. I am now confused and not sure what to do.
The visuals helped immensely, but I was wondering how to get a tighter knit? I've made a couple scarves, but the knit is very loose. Can someone help me?
