Today is World Peace Day and I didn't even know it until about twenty minutes ago. And they are also having a video contest with the deadline of Sept. 30, 2009 so you can get the message out.

My History as far as War Goes

This is a topic near and dear to my heart. I remember as a child being very afraid of war. I was born shortly after World War 2 ended and for years I thought that wars were something people did in the past but we were wiser now and no more wars were on the horizon.

Then my father was sent to Viet Nam. I was 7 years old then when our family of 7 was uprooted from New Mexico and moved to California. We had to stay near relatives so my mother could raise five kids without my father for 2 years minimum. Of course we never knew for sure if he would come home, or in what shape he would come home in. Fortunately he was one of the lucky ones, and apart from losing about 100 pounds in the Viet Nam humidity, he seemed well enough. But the toll it took on their marriage eventually ended in divorce.

And of course the USA has been involved in many wars since then, because we never seem to learn our lesson.

Creativity V War

Even though I was too young to be a hippy (I was born in 1958), their message wasn't wasted on me. Except for the drug abuse part, I was all over that paradigm. Be creative, get along, avoid goverment corruption, dance, sing, spread joy, and give peace a chance. Any person totally involved in the creative process doesn't have time to go out and wage wars. Even if you never paint a masterpiece, cast an iconic bronze statue, or hang 200 umbrellas in a tree, being engrossed in your own creative self-expression leaves little time to launch bombs at people you don't understand.

Ten Ways to Be an Advocate for Peace

1. Juggle for Peace. For a few decades now jugglers have been informally gathering to 'juggle for peace'.Whatever you focus on gets stronger.

2. Print out slogan buttons. You can either get your own button making machine for yourself or your group, or buy custom buttons in small quantities on http://www.etsy.com. Make buttons that say Another Mother For Peace or Give Peace a Change or whatever suits your group.

3. Belly dancers for Peace. Since middle Eastern dancers interact so often with people in the war torn areas, dance is one way for all of us to 'just get along'.

4. Write to your government officials. Contest any new plans to go to war. Or let them know we want our troops home now.

5. Join non-profits that help war victims. Groups like http://www.womenforwomen.org help women learn career skills so they can overcome the ravages of war. Or donate to the Red Cross or any of the groups trying to get food and medical supplies over where they are needed.

6. Fight poverty. Poverty breeds wars. There is enough for everyone providing we don't waste the money on fighting.

7. Meditate on Peace.

8. Speak out against Violence. When you hear your children say things that are hostile or violent, call them on it. Teach them to stand up for the weak when they are being attacked by bullies. Lead by example.

9. Make sure you are attacking the right group. When you lash out at someone, make sure it's the right someone. Often we have justified anger, but we fling it in the wrong direction, which doesn't fix the problem and hurts someone else.

10. Hurt people hurt people. So any healing you can do or give will help create more peace. Listen to someone who is struggling. Give out massages, Help plant trees and flowers. In other words, do things that make life better for someone.

My New Peace Blog

  • The Loss of Great Minds

Yesterday on the radio while driving down the road I heard a discussion about translators that could translate books in Egyptian to English. They could use so many more translators. Then they talked about how dangerous it is to live in Egypt and how they are experiencing 'brain drain' meaning smart people are leaving. Fleeing to safer places. Can you imagine if all the smart people in your country left? I think companies in the US often lay off the smartest people rather than pay them more. Then we wonder why the people left running the companies are so inept. Or they hire new people who know nothing about the business and pay them more than the people with experience. Such things create animosity which can escalate to violence. It's wiser to be loyal to your loyal employees.

  • War on TV I Don't Get It

I often wonder why my boyfriend and my father watch so many war shows.  Some are fictitious accounts of real wars, and other are documentaries that go on and on endlessly explaining war machines and marching strategies and weapon 'one-ups-man-ship'. I think it's important to be aware that wars happened and what the consequences are, but I don't think it's healthy to have those images put into your brain again and again and again. But they do have the right to watch what they watch and I have the right to walk out of the room and go do something else outside of the earshot of bombs falling on Pearl Harbor for the 1000th time.

  • World Peace

Today for Earth Day 2010 I made a Peace t-shirt. It's soaking wet so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to iron the wax off of the Peace sign. It took me most of the day. I look forward to wearing it.

Poverty and education are the keys. The poor need hope. That doesn't necessarily mean a hand out. We could start with paying them a fair wage instead of exploiting them. This would mean higher prices in the discount stores but I think it must be done. We have to help with schools; not necessarily through government funds, but somehow.

Thanks for a wonderful Hub. Being the peace you want to see in the world is so critically important, and then, as Pete Maida says, fight poverty and promote education - help people to feel better about themselves and know themselves and others so understanding is promoted. Poverty is a huge problem and until we learn, as the saying goes, to live simply so that others can simply live, violence and lack of understanding will continue. As Pope Paul VI said, "If you want peace, work for justice."

thanks for sharing your interesting and original thoughts on this most important subject.

Love and peace

Wow. I wish the political parties of the world could read your article. We could have avoided all the world conflict if we had just gotten high and juggled for the last few thousand years. I know a lot of artistic people and am artistic myself but I am not naive enough to think that everyone in the world wants peace or even that the homo sapian is a peaceful species. Most species are territorial and aggressive. We should all strive for peace but we need to realize that we have only survived through conflict and there is no end in sight. The freedom you have right now to write about unicorns and rainbows was paid for with the lives of millions of people who were courageous enough to stand up when called upon...people like me that fight for people like you who can never understand what it means to not be scared of self sacrafice and to fight for those who can't so that you can be comfortable in your little quiet home while we have nightmares of war every night. It is because we will always do what is necessary for the greater survival of our culture that the artists will be able to frolic and fornicate in fields of flowers and glare at us with disdain as we come back bloody and dirty with the blood of enemies who hate you and would slaughter you in death camps if they had a chance.

Fighting for peace is also a sacrifice. It's much easier to just hop on the war bandwagon.

I guess I missed it the first time around, but I don't and never have smoked pot. Why do people assume that anyone who prefers peace is a pothead? Grow up. Come to think of it, many soldiers have been busted for being dopers.

I love this hub! I'm a couple of years older than you and remember the Vietnam War vividly. We were a generation acutely aware of the horrors of war. The little girl running naked bathed in napalm comes to mind. Several schoolmates died there. I was a child during the Cuban missile crisis and was constantly afraid of a nuclear attack. Peace out, my friend.
