Spray Painted Spacescapes

A few weeks ago at work a man brought in a spray painted spacescape he got from a street artist in Venice Beach CA. My boss was standing there and he was very impressed with that style of art.

About 10 years ago I learned to do that type of art. So I asked my boss his favorite color, which is red, and started plotting a spacescape for him. So I let that cook in my brain a few weeks, and today I spent six hours making a stack of spacescapes. To my surprise, I'm better than I used to be. I refreshed my memory by looking at other spacescapes on google. I already had the spray paints, so I got some pan lids and other 'stencils' at the dollar store and I was ready to go today.

I figure the key to becoming a famous artist is to be great at what you do, and find a way to get maximum exposure for your art. So I may rent a space at the local farmer's market to do painting demos. Anything I don't sell on the spot I'll put on my website and sell it down the road.

Yesterday I took a stack of spacescapes to work to give to my friends. I was giving one to a friend in the framing department and one of the customers said they were awesome. So I asked if he wanted to pick one and he said, "How much are they."

So I said,"Free, I'm practicing so I can sell them on the internet some time soon." The feedback did me worlds of good.

He picked the one of Saturn out and said his little boy was going to love it for his bedroom.

Update: I went into work to teach a class and the boss paged me on the intercom. I went to see what he needed and he showed me he'd framed his space painting and had been waiting for me to come in and see it before he took it home. He loved it and had spent a lot of money on deluxe matting and framing and glass. It's sure nice to be appreciated.
